## History

IngaLåmi was founded in 2006 as Norway's answer to the growing demand for a major women-only ski event. Named after Queen Inga of Varteig, the 13th-century mother of King Håkon Håkonsson whose story is central to the Birkebeiner legend, the race honors women's role in Norwegian skiing history. Starting from the Birkebeineren Ski Stadium — the venue for the 1994 Winter Olympics biathlon and cross-country events — IngaLåmi has grown to become the largest women-only ski race in the world, with over 5,000 participants.
