FREEA 50km classic course through the Šumava National Park, one of the last great wilderness areas in Central Europe. The route traverses the high plateau of the Bohemian Forest, passing through ancient spruce forests and open mountain meadows. The terrain is rolling with moderate climbs, characteristic of the Šumava highland landscape.

Late January in the Šumava mountains along the Czech-German-Austrian border. The forested plateau at around 900-1100m provides reasonable snow reliability for Central Europe. Temperatures typically -10 to -4 degrees Celsius. The remote location and dense forest create a wilderness atmosphere.
Founded in 1978 in the Šumava mountains during the Czechoslovak era. The race takes place in what was once part of the Iron Curtain exclusion zone, an area that was off-limits to most civilians for decades. This enforced isolation preserved the ancient Bohemian Forest as one of Europe's most pristine wilderness areas. After the fall of communism, the Šumava Loppet became accessible to all and now draws skiers seeking a genuine wilderness Nordic experience.
