Lillehammer has one of the most reliable winter climates in Norway. The inland location delivers cold, dry conditions with consistent snow cover from November through April. Race day temperatures typically range from -15°C to -2°C.

IngaLåmi was founded in 2006 as Norway's answer to the growing demand for a major women-only ski event. Named after Queen Inga of Varteig, the 13th-century mother of King Håkon Håkonsson whose story is central to the Birkebeiner legend, the race honors women's role in Norwegian skiing history. Starting from the Birkebeineren Ski Stadium — the venue for the 1994 Winter Olympics biathlon and cross-country events — IngaLåmi has grown to become the largest women-only ski race in the world, with over 5,000 participants.
